The Douglas Read shop in Bridport has been in the Davis family for nearly fifty years. In 1956 Len Davis took over from Mr Read who had reached retirement, and they came to an arrangement so that the name of the shop would remain. Len's son Mike, and his wife Diana, are still involved in the running of the shop, with the help of their son Ben.

And like the Davis family, some of our customers are also in their third generation, demonstrating the trust that we have built up in providing shoes.

At Douglas Read all our staff are fully trained and qualified footwear specialists. Their extensive in-house training, in conjunction with the advice and guidelines set down by manufacturers, means that you receive an outstanding personalised service.

About where we are

Bridport is a friendly market town, build on its rope and net making industries, and is well worth a visit, especially on Market Days (Wednesdays and Saturdays). Saturday is the busier day with antique and bric-a-brac stalls lining South Street (we're on the right hand side when you have the town hall behind you), and a Farmers Market every 2nd Saturday of the month. We have small local shops to browse, Georgian buildings to admire, a museum to visit, a traditional brewery (Palmers) to tour, and Iron Age hill forts to explore!

A mile south of Bridport is West Bay, a busy harbour village, with distinctive food kiosks, fishing boats, stunning cliffs, and lovely views across to Lyme Bay from the coastal path. The BBC series Harbourlights starring Nick Berry was filmed here!
